Allington District Heat Network Public Consultation

The UK Government is committed to delivering a Circular Economy and this means making the best use of our resources. Reducing, reusing and recycling has become a normal thing to do in our homes and increasingly in the workplace.

But there are some materials that cannot be recycled and for these items, recovering the heat and energy embedded in the material is the best outcome.

And this is what we do at our Allington Integrated Waste Management Facility. The facility has been operational since December 2008 and is able to recover energy from up to 550,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste.

The owners of the Facility are Green Recovery Projects Ltd (GRP) – a joint venture between FCC Environment and iCON Infrastructure:

  • FCC Environment are a leading UK-based waste and resource management company who support local authorities and businesses to minimise the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
  • iCON is an award-winning, independent investment firm advising funds with c.$12 billion of capital. iCON focuses on making long term equity investments in private, mid-market, infrastructure businesses located in Europe and North America.

As well as investing in the reduction of its environmental impact, GRP sees waste as a valuable resource, seeking to extract maximum value – in the form of heat and power – from all that cannot be recycled.

Allington Energy Network Ltd (AENL) has been established by GRP to help Kent County Council reach its goal of becoming Net-Zero by 2041. AENL aims to lower carbon emissions while offering affordable energy to both homes and businesses.

As part of this effort, AENL plans to build a district heat network in Maidstone. This network will supply heat generated from the energy from waste process to various buildings, including offices, new housing developments, council facilities, and commercial spaces across Maidstone.

To assist in the development of the network, AENL has partnered with Ener-Vate, a specialist consultancy in district heating. Ener-Vate will provide expert support throughout every stage of the project.
