A District Heating Network is a system that supplies heat from a central source to multiple buildings for heating and hot water. Instead of each building having its own boiler, heat is generated in one place – called an Energy Centre – and delivered through a network of insulated underground pipes.

These systems often use sustainable heat sources like heat pumps, biomass, geothermal energy, or waste heat from industrial processes.

In the case of the Allington District Heating Network, the heat will come from the Allington Integrated Waste Management Facility, where waste is converted into energy. The Energy Centre will be located at this facility.

Hot water produced there will be piped to homes, businesses, and public buildings in the area. After the heat is used, the cooled water is returned to the Energy Centre to be reheated and reused.

This approach is much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than traditional heating systems, helping to reduce both energy use and carbon emissions.

District Heating Networks are a proven and efficient way to provide heat and hot water to buildings from a central source. They have been used in the UK for over 50 years and deliver a key role in the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The UK Government supports district heating as a vital technology to help reach Net Zero emissions by 2050. These systems are especially encouraged for both new developments and the retrofitting of existing buildings.

District heating is already widely used around the world. For example, in Denmark, over 60% of the population is connected to a district heating network. The UK Government estimates that by 2030, around 14% of UK homes could be connected to similar systems.

By using low-carbon energy sources – like waste heat, heat pumps, or biomass – district heating networks offer a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional heating methods.

The heat network is expected to be built in phases over several years. The timing and order of each section will depend on the needs and schedules of the customers connecting to the network.

Installation schedules will vary depending on the type of road, but we are committed to keeping disruption to a minimum. Wherever possible, we will maintain open traffic lanes and clearly signpost any necessary diversions.

All works will be carefully planned in coordination with the local highways authority and will only begin once full approval has been granted.

Once the underground pipes are installed, there will be no noticeable noise, smell, or heat at ground level. The system is designed to operate quietly and cleanly, with no disruption to the surrounding environment.
